When Should I Get My Electrical System Checked?

Information You need to know

Most likely when you are sitting in your home, watching television late at night, the last thing you are thinking about is when should you get your electrical system checked out, and that’s okay! If your homes electrical system was set up properly, worrying about it is the last thing that you should do. That being said, many of the homes being sold in todays market are manufactured homes built in one month or less. In many instances you should bring an electrician in to check your home routinely, but here are a few signs to get one in. Every 3-5 years. As with most areas of our lives whether it be cars, phones, computers, etc, we need to make sure we routinely manage our electrical systems as well. Many electricians will recommend having your homes electrical system checked every three to five years. This will allow you to stay on top of trends in the industry and to keep your home as safe as possible. Having a maintenance schedule is key! Your circuit breakers trip rather often Do you find yourself having to make trips to your electrical panel more than you would like? In most circumstances more than several times in a calendar year is abnormal. This can be a sign that your electrical panel may need changed (learn more about that here). If you find this is happening frequently in your home, make sure to get an electrician in as soon as possible to check out your situation. You just moved into a new home As mentioned in the introduction paragraph, moving into a new home can bring a lot of challenges. While many home loans do require an electrical inspection done, they are not always done with your interest in mind. If you are unable to choose the electrician to do an inspection, we would highly recommend getting one of your choosing in when you move in to your new home. Lights flicker when appliances turn on When you are sitting in your kitchen and hear your refrigerator kick on, do your lights flicker? Do they flicker when the furnace or air conditioner turn on? This is a sign that the burden the appliance is putting on your electrical system can be a little bit much. Appliances should be able to turn on or off with no problems. This is generally a problem found in older electrical systems. Keeping up on routine maintenance (every three to five years) will keep this from happening.
