Electric Panel Change Over

The electrical panel in your home should not be something you feel the need to worry about

Generally an electrical panel lasts quite some time before it is in the shape that it needs to be replaced. If you are a new home owner, you may want to take a look at the electrical panel to get an idea of what kind of shape it is in when you moved in, and have a game plan for when to get it changed. Getting your electrical panel changed is something in your home that you should entirely trust a professional to do. Here are some signs that it is time to upgrade your electrical panel changed over.

Your panel is old.

Generally speaking, electrical panels have a lifespan of 25-40 years. During that time frame there is a multitude of events that could happen. Often times there is an advance in the technology of the breaker panel which could lead to better efficiency. Also, you could be living in a household that uses more energy than an average home would, causing there to be wear and tear on the panel. Also, if your panel was manufactured by Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Pushmatic it needs to be changed as well!

Your panel is beginning to get a burning smell.

Burning smells almost never come out to be anything good or worthwhile. This is one of those cases. If the electrical panel is overheating, that means it is not longer able to withstand the amount of power your home outputs. If it is getting to this point you have likely noticed power “flickering”, or tripping a breaker more than what is considered normal.

You notice rust on your panel.

While this is a rare occurrence, water damage is possible to an electrical panel. This is a big concern as obviously water getting into the source of your electricity to your home can cause huge issues down the road. Make routine checks of your panel, especially if you recently had flooding or other water issues near the panel.

You recently added a large appliance to your home

Most electrical panels at their most basic of levels are able to withstand what is “normal” for output for a home, and even slightly above that. If you recently added a large appliance to your home and it is using a lot of power, it may be a good idea to get a new electrical panel, to ensure your home is able to withstand the new output.

If your current electric panel is made by Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Pushmatic it is also time to make a change to a new electrical panel. These brands are notorious for their malfunctions and are not recommended to be used, nor do we install these for our clients.

There are a lot of different reasons for needing a new electrical panel. If you feel like your home is in need of a new panel, give Streb Electric a call today and a professional will assist you. This is not something a non-professional should handle, and we would be more than happy to do this!
